To go or not Togo; that is the question….

June 13th, 2006 | By: Johnny | 23 Comments »

Here’s what it all comes down to, sports fans. In Korea, our game times are 1 a.m., 4. a.m, and 10 p.m., so I’ll be up for the Togo/Korea game, and I’ll try to stay awake for the France/Switzerland game, but 4 a.m. for Brazil/Croatia is a pisser. I’ll have to read about it on the news like everybody else, as I’ve got to give exams in the morning.

There’s no reason Korea should lose, except if they lose the physical battles as well as their composure. But after all the turmoil in Togo’s camp, the pressure is on for Korea to win, not the other way around. I’m predicting a one-goal deficit in Korea’s favour–either 1-0 (more likely as they’ve not had much in the way of firepower lately) or 2-1. But if Togo manages to pull a T&T or even win (don’t laugh; stranger things have happened), I shudder to think what the repercussions will be here in the ROK.

Being a true admirer of ‘the underdog’, I can’t say I’m totally rooting for Korea (a known quantity), however, I must say that I hope the decent officiating I’ve seen in the past few games continues. There’ve been precious few howlers as far as the referees are concerned. The last thing anybody needs to see is a game involving Korea that includes a stray dodgy call. That will give every single naysayer all the ammo they need.

By the by, I must give due props to that old bugger Pavel Nedved, who ran his ass off against the U.S. and in my opinion, was the man of the match. The U.S. were outhustled, but they’ve still got two games to turn it around–Eddie Johnson was perhaps the only noteworthy player for their side during the game, although Reyna did manage to hit the post once. The Italy/Ghana match was a delight–featuring end-to-end football and some poor finishing from The Black Stars was the only thing that kept this from being the shock result of the first round. An unusually clean match, I might add.

I’d love to try that but then I’d be afraid to catch the France game; one hour between matches isn’t much for sleepign.

Magic is all over the World Cup 2006!
Because of some strangeness in game results – this site becomes more and more famous http://www.voodoo4football.com
Is it possible – that synchronous desire of a lot of fans concentrates and affects on the results of the football game?

This should be a game of low expectations and bright, positive play: it’s the most even match-up the two teams can expect in their group, both will be smashing after three points in order to have a chance at putting on Cinderella’s dress and advancing past either France or Switzerland. And in fact Switzerland–dull, low-scoring, slightly haiughty Switzerland–are eminently beatable by enthusiasm alone, even if France, in this group (and despite having a squad of semi-retirees), isn’t.

Well, this game is not living up to its potential as a free-for-all battle of opportunities. It’s been more like a qualifiers’ game, each side has been uneven in its own play, out-of-wync within their own ranks, let alone with each other: there is neither a rythm nor a song to this game, except in the stands.

The game has now risen from its first-half ashen complexion, Korea is on the ball, Togo isn’t giving up, but playing a man down is going to hurt them. Korea smells goals, Korea smells Swiss cheese, and Korea is looking to drill the holes. But Togo still has some sharp chisels of its own for the Koreans.

KOREA WINS!!!!!

/Does the happy dance.

Good spirit. If France/Swiss play the way they are doing right now, a very good chance for Korea to make it to Sweet Sixteen.

What are you talking about. Korea played dismal in the first half and only came back with one man more – and even that not really convincing. France and Switzerland will dominate them and score easy wins. No more 12th and 13th man for you, Reds. It’s time to go back to what you were before 2002 – a below average team.

That was a bizarre game!! The Koreans were outmatched in terms of their physical strength, which wasn’t surprising, but their technical game only seemed to kick in during the second half. The first ten minutes just seemed incredibly lazy and they were lucky to have wised up; the Togans had some killer shots coming through the defence.

And I agree… Timezones make things a killer. (Grr…)
