South Korea Defeat Mexico 1-0
South Korea ended its 41-day overseas training camp with an impressive 1-0 win over Mexico in California. Lee Dong-Gook scored in the 15th minute and keeper Lee Woon-Jae played out of his mind to earn the clean sheet. Woon-Jae, who started in the 1994 and 2002 World Cups, made three saves for the shutout in his 91st international appearance. South Korea played without coach Dick Advocaat on the sidelines. The Dutchman was at home attending a family funeral.
“The goal was a gift,” South Korea assistant coach Pim Verbeek told reporters. “I am very pleased tonight with my entire team’s performance. Defensively we were very strong, we were good under pressure and in transition to attack. In preparation for Germany this summer, we have to focus on scoring more goals.”
This was a solid win for a young Korean team that is gaining experience heading into the World Cup. The defense was tight and the team took advantage of its scoring chance, albeit a lucky one at that. My big concern remains the offense which just doesn’t seem to be clicking yet. Advocaat preaches a more open style of play and in order for this to be successfull the right combination will have to be found up front.
Next up for the boys is a March 1 friendly against Angola in Seoul. I’m sure the team will welcome the opportunity to unpack their suitcases and enjoy some kimchi after this long road trip.
