My Picks

July 4th, 2006 | By: Johnny | 20 Comments »

Due to the excessive bitching and whining (read: trolling) from Allesandro, along with the stupidity of other posters who took the bait at every turn, I’m now shutting off the comments. Thanks for ruining a site that a lot of people enjoyed.

From the land of the ROK, I was quite disappointed that the Korean netizens spent so much time clogging up the Fifa.com website, when the reality is they wouldn’t have won the game (or progressed) had the Swiss goal been disallowed. Fifa eventually shut down the Korean site, and I think it reflects poorly on Korean fans who accepted the loss with dignity.

I was 7 and 1 with my picks, although I really didn’t think that the Ukraine would get past Switzerland.

The Germany/Argentina was a perfect example of a stalemate, with both teams cancelling each other out en-route to penalty kicks, and I have to go with Gabriel Marcotti’s excellent article about this match–the deciding factor was the coaching tactics. Klinsmann played it exactly right.

Brazil/France–happy to see the old bastards get through, especially considering Brazil’s mediocre (by their standards) performances. If they maintain their current form, they’ll be shoo-ins for the final and beyond.

England-Portugal? England only raised their game when it was necessary, particulary when Rooney did what I expected and fouled himself into the history books; Portugal played like crap, and neither team really deserved to go on based on overall merit, but I did predict Portugal to win it all. The lesson? Never bet on England when it goes to penalty kicks.

My picks:

Germany 3:1 Italy (if Klinsmann sticks in Borowski for the full 90–Frings will be missed)
France 2:1 Portugal

Final match?

Who cares? We’re in for some great semi-final games.

Hey Alessandro how about acting like you’ve won before. How about winning with dignity. There’s no need for what you just said about the Korean guy. This knocking on each other’s country shit is getting old. Grow up man.

Please another prediction!!! Unfortunately you don’t know anything about football. My prediction:
South Korea without the help of referees like in FIFA WORLD CUP 2002 will not play for the next competition in SOUTH AFRICA 2010.
ITALIA ITALIA ITALIA!!!

Korea sucks donkey balls, especially in 2002 when they had to resort to the skills of moreno to win.

Good they are out, so that the teams that deserve it can carry on.

to all the italian haters on this board. don’t be mad bc in 2002 you lost the worst way possible (to Korea with a golden goal!) and were victims to the greatest victory in that WC. all you are are crybabys who hold grudges. you got by australia with a messed up call by the officials. and you practice diving and crying like little bitches. VIVA LES BLEUS!!!

One word for Italy in this World Cup: LUCKY. Ask Australia.

Yes, you guys might win the World Cup this time against the Senegal A-squad (oops, I mean France), but had it not been for the refs gifting your diving players with favourable calls and penalties, you would have been gone in round 2.

Oh, and if you are so superior to “flat face” folks, then why do Japanese and Korean companies dominate your country (cars, electronics, etc)? Maybe Dawoo, Tyota and others should move out of Italy and pull all their advertising in Italian football and we’ll see who the tiny sh*t country will be.

Toyota, Daewoo??? WTF? for cheap tiny cars we can produce our own, namely “Fiat”. Even Alpha Romeo is doing better. And have u ever been to Italia?? I guess no, Korea has nothing to offer to us, u dominate nothing but in ur speculative imagination. It’s actualy quiet the opposite you guys are dying to get Ferrarri’s and Lanborghini’s and ask your plastic Korean ladies, they all love Prada, Gucci, Italian men and so on… Is your flat face so flat that your brain is damaged?? Dumbass tiny shit insipid flat country…

Alessandro,

Why are you being so childish?? I realize that the Italian fans must be on cloud 9 at the moment but comeon bro, give the name calling/abusive language a break and grow up guy… I am a fan of good football in general so I enjoy watching the powerhouse teams play like ITA etc. and this is die hard Korean fan speaking here… Its one thing to express your point of view but do it w/ some class… Please dont even bother responding to my post if its going to be another foul outcry but rather take the time to think about what Im saying to you… We should all be enjoying this time seeing as the WC only comes around every 4 years and not waste it by bitching at eachothers fan bases.

As much as I love how italy have been playing so far in the world cup, I feel so sorry for good italy fans and the country itself because of people like you.

Your comments make me realize how immature you really are.

To the Outcome:

After watching France dive to get the first goal, and watching Cannavaro and Buffon put on an outstanding performance to win, yes, I agree, Italy did deserve to win that game, full credit. I have great respect for the Italians, I just didn’t like some of the team’s tactics in earlier games. Credit to the French as well — they played excellent.

To Mr. Alessandro (or is it Alexandre?):
Question is, have YOU ever been to Italia? (All your postings originate from France!) I think you are a wanna-be Italy glory supporter who knows nothing about the world. Fiat compared to Toyota? Toyota earns billions in world sales, more than Fiat and Alpha Romeo combined, and even Hyundai has more selling potential than Fiat.

Lots of Italians do business with Asians and make lots of money. You see, “flat faced people” are richer and smarter than a little boy like you, who is hiding under his mother’s bed in Paris right now, scared to death that he will get headbutted.

If France had another goalie..they may of won.If Zidane was shooting a PK, they may of won..but they didnt..so what? Look how far they got compared to everyone else, other than Italy of course.

But what do you guys expect from Korea? They ARE a asian team, in which asian teams dont get very far in the World Cup. Korea got the farthest.

Also, whats up with “Italy just got lucky” i mean come on! Any sport\game you can call the win “lucky” You can call all of the World Cup games “Lucky” [[yah some did get lucky, but the Italy vs. France game...WAS NOT A LUCKY WIN]]

Ah well, nobody likes the Italian team…for exactely the same reason I dislike the Korean team: sore loosers. If you can’t admit defeat and start whinging if you loose and insulting the opposing team and Nation, then you shouldn’t participate in a WC. All the posts I had to delete from the Swiss blog after the Korea match…you wouldn’t believe it. And that from a team that was basically given free passage by the Refs in 2002.

Ah well, next WC we won’t have to bother. Now the Ozzies are competing in Asia, we can hope they take Koreas place. ;)

Let me tell you a little about myself.

My name is Alessandro, I’m old and bitter. Throughout my whole life, asian kids dominated over me. They got better test scores, stole my job, and even my wife. I hate it when they come to my country to buy designer bags and outfits that I can’t affort. Anyway, I now live with my mom, and am so sad and depressed that insulting others makes me feel a little better. Hence, I have decided to live as a facist and would like to suppress everyone so they can listen to what I have to say. I like to spend my days on the computer where noone can see me and show off how great I am. The korean blog is my favorite though, I think flat faces are hot. I don’t mean any harm, but people keep saying that I’m stupid, and that I smell like garlic and that my grease drips all over the place. I just want to make some korean friends. Will you be my friend?

wow, there is a lot of hate in here.

i think korea has become one of the best in asia and australia competing in the same block as them and japan will really up the standards in the asia region. this is very exciting as a powerhouse like australia can really work with all asia to give the game the boost that it needs in the region. maybe in 2014 the WC will not be only be dominated by europe and south america. im hoping for a more level competition
