Death To The Mascots!

May 19th, 2006 | By: Johnny | 1 Comment »

This article about the bankruptcy of the company involved in manufacturing and merchandising the latest World Cup official mascot is just another in a series of blunders that involve half-thoughts by know-it-alls who have too much money and not enough common sense.

The mascots for 2002 were even worse; most of my students found them to be either “ugly”, “scary”, or just plain “dumb”. I had to agree then, even during the tournament, they couldn’t give those little bastards away. Whether it was stuffed dolls, t-shirts, key-chains, etc., nobody wanted them.

I think mascots are a good idea, they add an element of fun to the tournament and are kid friendly. But the last two World Cups: puke! I agree that the 2002 ones were just awful; and now x-rated Goleo and that scary talking ball of his are a close second. What happened to good old Tip and Top, Gaucho, Pique and even Striker? Those were simple cartoons, but really represented the spirit of the game well. The present days of computer aided three dimentional mascots will go down in infamy as dark days of football merchandising.
