Corea or Korea?

May 17th, 2006 | By: Johnny | 8 Comments »

For those of you who wonder why some of the banners from the previous World Cup read ‘Corea’ instead of the more commonly-spelled ‘Korea’, you’re not alone. Check out this blog entry for a bit more information.

Incidentally, the t-shirts this time around make a lot more sense (”Reds Go Together”), and look a lot nicer; for an article and picture, check this out.

Thanks for the shout out about the Corea-versus-Korea link. The more people spread the word, the faster that silly issue will die and we can focus our attention on more important matters.

My favorite at the 2002 World Cup was “Korea Team Fighting!” – I still kick myself for not getting one of those shirts.

Corea – [Spanish], Italian
Corée – French
Korea – [English], Dutch, German
Корея – Russian

The age Columbus or Magellan, Spain is the greatest contry. So Corea is used by Western.
During WW1 to WW2, UK and US are the powers. so Korea is used.
That’s all.

Historical name of Korean in Japanese.

12c komabito 高麗人
-1950 chosenjin 朝鮮人
1950- kankokujin 韓国人
1980- korean コリアン

North Korean who lives in Japan demanded calling themselves as
Zainichi Chosen Kankoku jin (在日朝鮮・韓国人), and South Korean demanded as Zainichi Kankoku Chosen jin (在日韓国・朝鮮人). It was very serious buttle in 1980.
After all, Korean decided calling themselves as zainichi korean(在日コリアン).

We, Japanese always welcome which name (Korean or Corean) is used by Korean(s).

UM, it’s like that because the japanese wanted to come before the koreans in the alphabet. we were corea in the beginning but then became korea after japan took over. now we’re changing back to corea.
